Katatonia es un grupo sueco de Doom Metal formado en 1991 por Jonas Renkse y Anders Nyström al inicio de su primer álbum lanzado Dance of December Souls con estilo del Black/Doom con influncias de Death/Doom hasta 1998 con la salida de tercer álbum Discouraged Ones con el paso del Rock Gótico y Rock Alternativo hasta el 2001. Los primeros álbumes de Katatonia se caracterizan por la melancolía de su sonido, catalogados a menudo como Doom Metal, y una notable influencia a estilos como Black Metal y Death Metal. Sin embargo, después de lanzar dos álbumes, el grupo cambia la dirección de su música a un sonido más moderno y melódico, gracias al uso de sonidos alternativos y riff más pesados con base en los últimos álbumes lanzados por la banda.
